Project:
Ponzio Art Center
2017
Denver, CO

Overview
Nestled within the vibrant, 94-acre campus of Colorado Academy, the Ponzio Art Center stands as a beacon of artistic exploration and education in Southwest Denver. The campus is distinguished by its divisional buildings for Lower, Middle, and Upper Schools, with shared facilities for dining, library, athletics, and the arts. The Ponzio Arts Center, once a dormitory, has been transformed into the heart of the school's artistic endeavors, serving as a multi-disciplinary hub that fosters creativity across all age levels.

The Ponzio Art Center project at Colorado Academy presented a unique and enriching challenge that I had the privilege to lead in terms of installations. Undertaken in 2016, this project was not just about adding space but about crafting environments that inspire and facilitate creativity. The design intricately played with the dynamics of light and shadow, using them not just as elements of design but as transformative agents that redefine the space from day to night.
In my role, I focused on ensuring that each space within the center could serve as a canvas for imagination and learning. The galleries and studios were designed to use natural light as an integral part of the artistic experience, enhancing the display and appreciation of art. This project underscored my appreciation for the subtle interplay between light and materials, revealing how they can dramatically alter the perception and ambiance of a space.
One of the most rewarding aspects of the Ponzio Art Center was its ability to blur the lines between indoor and outdoor learning environments. The design emphasizes the outdoors as an extension of the classroom, offering a seamless transition that enriches the educational experience. As art takes its place on the walls, the building itself transforms, with each piece acting as a window that offers unique views and insights, truly embodying the center's role as a hub of creativity and learning.
