Custom Cabinet Design
Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning - University of Michigan

Overview
The Custom Cabinet project was conceived with the innovative idea of blending film prop design with practical furniture solutions for small apartment living.

This multifunctional piece includes a variety of components: a desk, a high-back chair, a storage stool, a sliding wardrobe, and a table equipped with underbelly storage, alongside numerous compartments designed specifically for storing props.
Designed for versatility and ease of movement, the cabinet is mounted on wheels, allowing for effortless mobility. It adheres to height restrictions to ensure it can easily pass through standard doorways, and it is equipped with a kickstand to provide stability when stationary. A unique feature of this cabinet is a sign indicating the end, which can be rolled back to adapt the cabinet for various uses.
The seating solutions within the cabinet, including the chair and stool, utilize pool noodle cushions. This choice not only offers the necessary support but also contributes to the cabinet's innovative design, aligning with a Mr. Rodgers's aesthetic for costume changes. This project was an exploration into the functionality of scene-setting furniture, demonstrating how a single piece can be dissected and reconfigured for multiple purposes.
While the Custom Cabinet was initially designed as a prop, its practicality extends beyond the stage. It showcases the potential for real-life application in furniture design, offering a creative and space-saving solution for those living in limited spaces.
